You and the pen and the paper are a thruple, writing as one.
What I love about being a writer and creative person is the insight it gives me into art and art-making.
You can’t chase two rabbits at once.
There are things I am still afraid of, but being myself will no longer be one of them.
Writing is a mystery to me, a heroic mystery. It’s such a challenge every time I go to the page. I never know how I’m going to finish anything without first getting into it.
One should never resort to dullness, ennui, tedium, languor in order to embrace acceptance.
I hadn’t thought the manuscript was so bad it deserved being torched.
When I go deep with my direct community of women we are able to identify needs to aid in the development of our juiciest, most creative selves.
Editing is where the poems take shape and come to life.
I think cooks are the happiest artists. With every meal they prepare and serve, they cycle through a full range of artistic pleasures, from concept to composition to completely grateful and full bellies. As a writer, I envy the way a cook’s process reaps rewards, reflects the very picture of human satisfaction, and repeats. I have observed this up close because I am married to a cook.
I borrow from my wife Helen's model of artistic joy and satisfaction because so many writers come to me dissatisfied. I am interested in pleasure, and I think writers suffer when we deprive ourselves of the full spectrum of the pleasures of writing.
That’s why I’m hosting The Writer’s Pleasure Club. I hope you’ll join me for this juicy lunch-hour video call to indulge in all the delicious pleasure available to writers.
